MailSnare adds OCR capabilities to its filtering technology to detect image-based spam

A significant percentage of the spam that currently eludes most spam filtering systems makes use of embedded images rather than standard text. Traditional spam filters are unable to interpret the content of images since they rely primarily on the textual portion of the e-mail. To combat this growing source of spam, MailSnare has added sophisticated Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to its spam filtering system. OCR technology allows MailSnare spam filters to decode and interpret embedded images just as if they were written using standard text. For most people, this should result in a sharp decrease in the number of pieces of spam that previously eluded the spam filters using embedded images.
